First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding
The first American edition of this work, published the same year as the first U.K edition. Annie Brassey penned several travel works based on her voyages which were extremely popular and translated into several languages. This work is beautifully illustrated with numerous vignettes and a folding map to the start of the work. Lacking eight maps which have been neatly removed. In addition to her written works, Brassey also compiled large collections of natural and ethnological curiosities from her travels which were exhibited at Hastings in 1881 and 1885 and South Kensington in 1883.
Condition
In the original publisher's cloth pictorial binding. Externally, smart with light bumping to the head and tail of spine as well as to the extremities. Spine has faded slightly. Light rubbing to the joints. The odd marks to the boards. Front hinge is strained but firm. Internally, binding is strained in places, particularly to 199-222 which has gatherings loosening. Otherwise, binding is firm. Pages are generally bright with just the odd spot.
