Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Prince Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi, was an Italian explorer known for his Arctic explorations and mountaineering expeditions. In 1899 the Duke organised an expedition toward the North Pole with the aim to establish a camp at Franz Joseph Land and from there travel to the North Pole by sled. During the night at the camp the Duke lost two fingers to frostbite and was unable to continue with the journey to the Pole. The expedition was then led by Camptain Umberto Cagni which he broke the record held by Fridtjof Nansen for the northernmost point reached, by a distance of 35 to 40 kilometres.
