The first edition of these works. In the original unclipped dustwrapper. Two volumes of Sir Harry Luke's travel memoir, recounting his time travelling in the Near East at the beginning of the twentieth century. These works are particularly interesting, as it shows the world as it was leading up to the Second World War. 'An Eastern Chequerboard', published in 1934, illustrated with a frontispiece, and thirty-one plates. Collated, complete. 'More Moves on an Eastern Chequerboard', published in 1935, illustrated with a frontispiece, and twenty-three plates. Collated, complete. Sir Harry Luke was an official in the British Colonial Office, serving in Barbados, Sierra Leone, Palestine, Malta, Fiji, and more.
Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original unclipped dustwrappers. Externally, smart. A little bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities.Just a few light marks to the boards and spines. Some spots to the fore edges. Dustwrappers are age-toned with some closed tears, with some rubbing and marks, and a pen mark to the rear wrap of 'More Moves'. Tape repair to the head of the tail of the dustwrapper of 'An Eastern Chequerboard' to the reverse, and to the tail of the folds. Tape repair to the head of the tail of the dustwrapper of 'More Moves' to the reverse. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd light spot.
