Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding

The first edition. Undated, dated using Jisc. This is volumes I and II of a three volume set. Both volumes are bound together. Collated, complete, with all plates. Being 72 plates and two engraved title pages. All plates are extremely bright, and depict scenes across Syria, Palestine and Asia Minor. Gift inscription to the recto of front endpaper, 'Florence Lindsay, From her affectionate husband. 24th December 1849'. With descriptions of each plate by John Carne. Carne was a traveller who wrote many works on Levant, Egypt and Palestine. As well as regularly contributing to 'New Monthly Magazine' he wrote many works. A finely bound work.

Condition

In a full crushed morocco binding. Externally, very smart. Rubbing to the head and tail of spine. Light shelfwear to the joints. Fading to the spine. Prior owners' inscriptions to the recto of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Occasional light spots to pages.
