Louise Jordan Miln has now somewhat faded into obscurity, despite the popularity of her novels set in China, such as 'In a Shantung Garden', 'Peng Wee's Harvest', and 'Ann Zu-Zan'. Miln travelled extensively during her life, giving her the information and experience to write 'Little Folk of Many Lands'. Louise was married to George Crichton Miln, an actor who specialised in Shakespeare's works. With a frontispiece and a further forty-five plates. Collated, incomplete, as lacking plates facing page one-hundred and eight-six, 'A Favourite Daughter', one-hundred and ninety-two 'Amah and Child', and one-hundred and ninety-eight 'A Literati of the First Degree'. Also lacking pages i to xii, and one-hundred and ninety-nine/two hundred.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, some markings to the boards and to the spine, causing a little discolouration. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Head of spine is lightly lifting but remains firm. Light rubbing to the joints. Two library stamps to the front pastedown, 'Spurgeon's College Library'. Library stamp to the recto of the front endpaper, 'Pastor's College, Missionary Library'. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are bright and generally clean throughout with just the odd spot. 'Pastor's College, Missionary Library' to the recto of the half-title page, to the recto of the frontispiece, to the head of the title page, to the head of page one, fifteen, one-hundred and five, one-hundred and eight-nine, two-hundred and seventy-seven, and to the head of the plate facing page thirty-two. Lacking pages i to xii, and one-hundred and ninety-nine/two hundred. Page two-hundred and one/two-hundred and two lifting, and page one-hundred and eighty-five/one-hundred and eight-six is loose but present. Plate facing page eighty is loose but present. Lacking plates facing page one-hundred and eight-six, 'A Favourite Daughter', one-hundred and ninety-two 'Amah and Child', and one-hundred and ninety-eight 'A Literati of the First Degree'. Chip to the foredge of page one-hundred and fifty-one/one-hundred and fifty-two, due to how the pages were cut.
