A beautiful collection of plates showcasing the picturesque scenes in Switzerland, as it was at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
The scenes are briefly described in illuminative.
Illustrated and written by James Pattison Cockburn. Cockburn was an artist, and a military officer born into a military family. He took sketchbooks with him as he travelled with the military, and drew as he was travelling around. His other works include 'The Route of the Simplon', 'Pompeii', and 'A Voyage to Cadiz and Gibraltar'.
Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper, 'S. A. Storey, 'West Holme', Heighington, ... 1921'.
Condition
In a half marbled calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the boards and spine. Light fading to the spine. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Light surface cracks to the spine. Hinges are starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and clean with a few light spots. Tissue guards have offset to the facing pages.
