The furore she refers to is almost certainly the attainment of self-governance by the state in 1890, and the subsequent inception of a grand water pipeline to its goldfields. While it was under construction, the residents voted in favour of federation with the rest of Australia, and the territory became a state the year before this book was first published. An adventure story as much as a travel book, which admirably captures the astonishing economic devlopment in the West at this time.
