Description

Illustrated

She writes in the opening chapter, "Having travelled all over Tasmania, Queensland, New South Wales, and South Australia (Now United Australia), I one day made up my mind to set out for the land of gold, Western Australia, that has created such a furore in these last few years." The furore she refers to is almost certainly the attainment of self-governance by the state in 1890, and the subsequent inception of a grand water pipeline to its goldfields. While it was under construction, the residents voted in favour of federation with the rest of Australia, and the territory became a state the year before this book was first published. With numerous plates of illustrations, showing mining installations, agricultural practises, aborigines, and the landscape. An adventure story as much as a travel book, which admirably captures the astonishing economic devlopment in the West at this time.
