Description

An Important Work, First Edition, Folding Maps, Illustrated, Leather Binding

Ferguson notes that this is the 'first authentic and official account' of this expedition of the First Fleet to Botany Bay and therefore the settlement of Australia. (Ferguson 47). To the preface, the publisher notes that there was great anticipation for this work. This is supported by the large list of subscribers to the start of the work which include notable geographer Alexander Dalrymple, botanist Joseph Banks, and the father to traveller and Orientalist Sir George Staunton 2nd Baronet, Sir George Staunton 1st Baronet. This is an early impression of the work, with page 122 mispaginated as 221, the 'Wulpine' state of the 'Vulpine Opossum' plate and the 'Kangooroo' state of this plate, which was later changed to 'Kanguroo'. Beautifully illustrated, with a frontispiece, engraved title page and 53 engraved maps, plates and charts. Numerous plates depict the new species of animal encountered in Australia. Plate 52, 'Watts Shark; is hand-coloured. The maps to this work are by John Hunter and William Dawes. With the errata bound in preceding the 'Advertisement', and two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. Collated, complete. With a list of convicts sent to New South Wales on the hulks to the rear of the appendix. This list provides the location of conviction, the date and the number of years they have been sentenced to. This is therefore, an original source for genealogy of the early settlers of Australia. The main source for this work were the official papers of Governor Phillip, which were sent to the Government, in addition to his journal. Arthur Phillip was a Royal Nay Officer and the First Governor of New South Wales. The penal colony he founded later became Sydney. Lieutenant Shortland, Watts, Ball and Captain Marshall's journals have also been added to this work, which paints a detailed picture of the early settlements in Australia. There are chapters on the preparation before the voyage, expeditions into the interior around Botany Bay and Port Jackson, the trials and tribulations of initially building the colony and much more. This work also forms one of the earliest examples of coastal exploration. The eleven ships of the First Fleet set sail from Portsmouth on 13 May 1787. 'HMS Supply' reached Botany Bay on the 18th January 1788. Phillip had been recommended Botany Bay by Sir Joseph Banks, who has accompanied James Cook on his 1770 voyage. However, Phillip felt that there was poor soil and a limited water source. It was then he decided to sail onward to Port Jackson, where they landed at Sydney Cove on the 26th January. The illustrations to this work are mostly after specimens and drawings sent to London by Surgeon General John White. An important work of Australiana, and a fundamental book for any travel collection.
