What Our Customers Say...

Description

Publishers' Original Binding

Miller was a publisher active from the mid to late nineteenth century. He was one of the first to make a practice of producing box sets for series. Pagination is unusual, in that the index starts at page 134 when the appendix ceases at page 122. There are also many cancel leaves bound in. Collated, it appears that this copy has been bound in without plates 'New York Hospital', 'Episcopal Theological Seminary' and 'Clarendon Hotel'. As this work is in the original binding, and there is no evidence of their removal, this may be due to a printing error. With the folding coloured map and large monochrome folding map. There are several plates that are not listed on the illustration list, which may be advertisements for the buildings during the 'Notable Stores etc. chapter. These are for the 'Home Insurance Company' at page 78, 'E Anthony' to page 76, 'Grover and Baker' to page 76*, 'Taylor's Saloon' to page 84 and 'Manhattan Insurance Company' to page 86. The frontispiece is also not mentioned to the list of illustrations, which shows a collection of boats on some water. This work touches on historical localities, New York 'as it is'm banks, markets, ferries, piers, pleasure excursions and more. It is a lovely guide to New York.

Condition

In the publisher's original binding. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the extremities and to the joints. Fading to the boards. Front hinge is strained but firm. Prior owner's inscriptions to the endpapers and to the title page, C S Agnew. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with just the odd scattered spots.
