Sir Edward North Buxton was conservationist and Liberal Part politician. Through this expedition, Buxton promoted the 1841 Niger expedition.

An account of the 1841 Niger expedition, when a group of missionaries and activists took iron steam vessels to Lokoja, to try and make treaties with the native people and introduce them to Christianity.

However, the crew suffered a high mortality rate from disease on the ships, resulting in the expedition being called off.

This work explains the thoughts behind the expedition, and how exactly it went wrong, whilst also looking at the things the crewmates did achieve.

Written by Captain William Allen, who is best known for commanding the HMS Wilberforce on this expedition.

Also written by T. R. H. Thomson.
