Written and illustrated by John Britton, a noted English antiquary who is best known for his work 'The Beauties of England and Wales'.

Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'Morton Kelsall Peto'. Peto was an English entrepreneur and railway developer. He managed construction firms that built the new Houses of Parliament, and Nelson's Column. As a railway contractor who helped  in the rapidly expanding railways of the time.

Condition

In a half morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Minor rubbing to the boards and extremities. Light bumping to the extremities. Volume I with a little loss of paper to the joints, to the front joint of Volume III, to the rear joint of Volume IV. Minor mark to the front joint of Volume I. Minor marks to Volume IV. Front hinge of Volume I is starting but firm. Bookplate to the front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spots. Light tidemarks to the head of some of the plates.
