What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Leather Binding, Pleasing Copy

Samuel Smiles was a renowned Scottish author and reformer best known for his masterpiece 'Self-Help', that is often lauded as "the bible of mid-Victorian liberalism". Published by Smiles in 1859, 'Self-Help' vehemently attacked materialism and the laissez-faire government, claimed that poverty was caused largely by irresponsible habits, and promoted thrift. The work was incredibly popular upon publication, selling twenty thousand copies within one year and swiftly making Smiles a renowned celebrity and authority on lifestyle and education. First published in 1875, this work 'Thrift' was intended as a sequel to 'Self-Help' and Smiles's other work 'Character', and similarly pomotes thrift as 'the basis of Self-help', and further criticizes materialism. 'TWENTIETH THOUSAND' to the title page.
