Description

Early Edition, Publishers' Original Binding

The second edition thus of this work, which was originally published a year earlier in 1911. Brieux was a popular French dramatist noted for his didactic style which was a social commentary or attack. Signed by Charlotte Shaw to the half-title 'Caroline Blacker from Charlotte F Shaw'. Charlotte Shaw translated the first play to this work, 'Maternity'. 'The Three Daughters of M Dupont' has been translated into English by St John Hankin and 'Damaged Goods' by John Pollock. Tipped in to the verso of front endpaper is an article regarding Charlotte Payne Townshend's marriage to George Bernard Shaw from the perspective of Shaw. With the bookplate of one John Whall to the front pastedown. Bookseller's label to the front pastedown, Hugh Rees Ltd. Loosely inserted is an article on Caroline Townshend, a relative of Charlotte Bernard Shaw, Nee Townshend. Tipped in to the front endpaper is an advertisement for this work. Loosely inserted is some correspondence between prior owner Kenneth Brown and Peter Cormack of the Libraries and Arts Department of the William Morris Gallery, Walthamstow. To these letters they discuss the loosely inserted article on Caroline Townshend to this work and the inscription from Charlotte Bernard Shaw to 'Caroline Blacker'. Brown inquires as to whether Blacker and Townshend are the same lady. Cormack states that Blacker could not be the same woman as the noted stained glass artist who created works on commission for Shaw. He notes that this is because Townshend never married. Charlotte Payne-Townshend or Charlotte Shaw, was an Irish political activist and prominent member of the Fabian Society. She fought hard for women's rights. Her translation of Brieux's Maternitie was specifically for the London stage. It was performed by the Stage Society at Daly's theatre in 1910.
