What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Pleasing Copy, Publishers' Original Binding, Signed, Very Scarce, With Letter
Featuring numerous genealogical charts from various families in the county of Devon, and an index of places and names to the rear of the work. With the ink inscription of 'G. E. Cokayne' to the front pastedown, that of the renowned English genealogist and long-serving herald at the College of Arms in London, George Edward Cokayne. Cockayne is best known for his authoritative reference works 'The Complete Peerage' and 'The Complete Baronetage', and for his role as the Clarenceux King of Arms. This work also features a signed letter addressed to Cokayne by the editor of the work, Frederic Thomas Colby, tipped to the front pastedown: 'Litton Cheney Sept. 2. 1881. My Dear Cokayne, I believe I did Maclean injustice. The article in the 'Genealogist' was written, I am now fairly sure, by Marshall himself. Thinking it was Maclean, I wrote my mind pretty freely to the "Editor", and my letter could not have been pleasant reading! We are going to Tidcombe next week for a day or two, and on the 19th to [?] for a few days. Very poor harvest. I hope you have not found it dull in the country, Yours Mr. Colby'. With a handwritten errata slip tipped to the front free-endpaper, and the occasional loosely inserted slip to the odd page containing notes and annotations.
