Illustrated, Limited Edition, Original Binding

A limited edition edition de luxe, numbered 467 of 500. 'The Pilgrims of the Rhine' is an exciting novel set in Germany. Illustrated with a frontispiece, vignette title page, fourteen plates, and numerous in-text engravings. Written by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Bulwer-Lytton was a politician and popular writer of his time, though reputation and popularity suffered a sharp decline when he died. He is known for writing the opening line 'it was a dark and stormy night'. Illustrated by David Roberts. Roberts was known for his detailed lithographs of Egypt and the Near East, made during his trips to the regions. Also illustrated by Daniel Maclise, a historian painter and portrait painter, who painted portraits of some of the most prominent figures of his time, such as Charles Dickens, and Letitia Elizabeth Landon. Collated, complete.

Condition

In the original cloth binding. Externally, smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Spine label is discoloured and rubbed with some loss. A little cockling to the boards. Front hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Tidemark to the frontispiece and to the vignette title page.
