The first edition of this work. An interesting history of the River Nile, documenting the author's exploration of the river during his time in Africa. Looking at the river itself, and the people and cities along the river. Illustrated with a frontispiece, one folding map, and seventy-three plates. Written by Harry Johnston, a British explorer. He wrote many works on Africa, and could speak many African languages. He was one of the key players in the 'Scramble for Africa', the colonisation of African territory by Western Europe. Illustrations by the author. Map is by J. G. Bartholomew, a cartographer who had a royal warrant. He is well known for naming the continent Antarctica. Collated, complete.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. A little bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot and handling mark.
