Description

First Edition, Illustrated

The first edition of these works. Two volumes, being the 1841 and the 1843 editions of 'The Keepsake'. 'The Keepsake' was a literary annual that was published from 1828 to 1857. It contained a collection of short stories, poetry, essays, and illustrations. It was intended to appeal towards young women. Some of the contributors to 'The Keepsake' were Walter Scott, Mary Shelley, Letitia Elizabeth Landon, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Robert Southey. The 1841 volume with a frontispiece, vignette title page, and thirteen plates. This volume contains 'Beatrice di Tenda' by William Harrison Ainsworth, 'A Vision' by Lord Leigh, 'Ode: The Last Seperation' by Sir Edward Lytton Bulwer, 'Lines on Torquay' by Walter Savage Landor, 'Flattery' by Mrs. Torre Holme, 'Scenes in the Life of a Young Portrait Painter' by Countess Blessington, and more. The 1843 volume with a frontispiece, vignette title page, and eleven plates. This volume contains 'Servian Jealousy' by Isabella F. Romer, 'The Lord of Riccia's Heir' by the Countess of Blessington, 'Waking Dreams' by Mrs S. C. Hall, 'The Lady of Ashlynn' by Miss Theodosia Garrow, 'Death and the Child' by Lady E. Stuart Wortley, and more. These volumes were both edited by Marguerite Gardiner, the Countess of Blessington. She edited the annual from 1841 to 1849. Gardiner was an Irish novelist and journalist. She was also a literary hostess, and became friends with Lord Byron in Genoa in 1823, writing 'Conversations with Lord Byron' after the experience. Collated, complete.

Condition

In the original publisher's silk covered boards. Externally, generally, smart. Some light loss to the joints of the 1843 volume, and a very little to the head of the rear joint of the 1841 volumes. Light bumping to the extremities. Light discolouration and marks to the boards, a little heavier to the 1843 volume. The front hinge of the 1841 volume is starting after the frontispiece, resulting in the frontispiece working loose. The rear hinge of the 1841 volume is starting but firm. Front hinge of the 1843 volume is strained but remains firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot.
