Very Scarce
A very scarce work. The fourth edition of this work. The signatures run as B-M6. A very scarce cookery work published in the mid nineteenth century. The work offers basic recipes that are aimed towards middle class families. The author states that she finds an abundance of cookery books for the higher ranks of society, but no plain work on domestic cookery for the middle classes. She states that she wished to present a cookery book that could be used by any on the economical scale, with a pricing range that could be reached by all. Accompanied with an illustrated section describing the art of carving, and how to carve and animal with as little waste and mess as possible. Undated, dated from the date that Whittaker & Co were publishing at Ave Maria Lane under that name. They were active under that name in Ave Maria Lane between 1834 and 1840. With an engraved vignette title, and nine in-text engravings. Written anonymously by 'a lady'. A very scarce work of cookery from the nineteenth century.
Condition
Disbound. Externally, small parts of the backstrip are still attached. Outer wraps are discoloured and foxed. Edge wear to the wraps, with some loss to the extremities. Title page is torn from the binding but still attached by two inches at the head. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some foxing. Edgewear to the textblock, resulting in a small amount of loss to the extremities, never affecting text.
