'The Ancestor' was a quarterly review issued between 1902-1905 that offered essays on family and county histories, heraldry, and other fascinating antiquities.
Edited by Oswald Barron, a journalist and scholar on heraldic and genealogical subjects.
Each volume is richly illustrated with monochrome plates and accompanied by publisher's advertisements to the rear, as detailed below.
With a wide variety of contents, including 'Fifteenth Century Costume', 'An Ancient Scottish Settlement in Hesse', 'Notes on some Durham Families', 'The Percys of Northumberland' and much more.

Volume I - April 1902. With a coloured frontispiece, twenty-three plates and an array of in-text illustrations. Eight leaves of advertisements to rear.
Volume II - July 1902. With a frontispiece, eighteen plates and numerous in-text illustrations. Eight leaves of advertisements.
Volume III - October 1902. With a coloured frontispiece, nineteen plates and numerous in-text illustrations. Four leaves of advertisements.
Volume IV - January 1903. With a coloured frontispiece, twenty-one plates and numerous in-text illustrations. Five leaves advertisements.

Condition
In the original paper covered boards, with spine labels. Externally, generally smart. With fading to the boards and rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Heaviest to the spine heads and tails of volumes 1, 8 and 9. Chipping to the spine labels, heaviest to volume 12. Marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with offsetting to the endpapers and occasional spots, heaviest to the first and last few leaves.
