Description

First Edition, Leather Binding

This legal novel is from a Tory standpoint and provides satire that could rival that of Thackeray. It is a tragi-comic novel, which deals with law, and saw instant success upon its publication. The first edition in book form, following it's publication in 'Blackwood's Magazine'. Collated, this work has been bound without the publisher's adverts and the half titles. Warren tells the tale of Tittlebat Titmouse, a draper's assistant, who comes into a large fortune due to forged documents. These forged documents were the handiwork of lawyers who blackmail Titmouse upon his acquisition of the property. This novel was based on a real forgery case, the 'Alexander Humphrys-Alexander Stirling forgery case'. Tittlebat is said to be based upon Edward Oxford, the first person to attempt to assassinate Queen Victoria. Samuel Warren was a British barrister, novelist and MP. He studied at Kingswood School in Bath and upon initially starting a higher education in medicine transferred to law. Binder's stamp to the front pastedown, H Brown. A fascinating satire, which draws on real aspects of British law during the nineteenth century.
