Six popular sporting novels by Robert Smith Surtees. A privately printed edition, illustrated from the plates of the Original edition issued by Bradbury, Agnew& Co. with both black and white and hand-coloured plates as issued by Phiz, John Leech, W. T. Maud, and others. Coloured plates mostly protected by tissue guards.
In lovely uniform half morocco bindings signed Bayntun of Bath. Complete with half titles.
These novels follow the adventures of Jorrocks, a vulgar but good-natured sporting cockney grocer. Surtees' novels are entertaining and witty, and his writing style and characters are often compared to Charles Dickens.

Hawbuck Grange, dated c1888 from Jisc. Illustrated by Phiz and W. T. Maud with a hand-coloured frontispiece and title page, as well as numerous engravings in text, thirteen full page plates in black and white, and seven full page engravings on steel, hand-coloured. Collated, complete. Including a sketch of the careers of Robert Smith Surtees and John Leech.
Mr Romford's Hounds, dated c1900 from Jisc. Illustrated with a hand-coloured frontispiece and title page, illustrations in text, as well as four full page plates in black and white, and twenty-three full page engravings on steel, hand-coloured, by John Leech, Hablot K Browne, and others. Condition
In uniform half morocco bindings over cloth covered boards signed Bayntun of Bath, gilt to the top edge. Externally lovely with minor shelf wear only. Pictorial bookplate to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Occasional odd minor odd spotting, particularly to the edges, otherwise the pages are bright and clean. Minor staining mark to pp. 195-8 of 'Mr. Romford's Hounds,' not affecting the text. Illustrated with numerous engravings in text, full page plates in black and white, and hand-coloured full page engravings on steel. Collated, complete.
