Description

Early Edition, Illustrated, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, Uncommon

With publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work. Uncommon. The second edition. Collated complete with thirty two full page monochrome plates. John Henry Walsh was an English sports writer, who often wrote under the pseudonym 'Stonehenge'. After working as a surgeon for a number of years, he resigned his position in order to focus upon his passion for rural sports, publishing his first work on the subject, entitled 'The Greyhound'. He is perhaps best known for his work entitled 'Manual of British Rural Sports', published in 1856. He later went on to become the editor of The Field magazine, at which point he began using his pseudonym 'Stonehenge'. This work, edited by Stonehenge, is a charming collection of articles and letters relating to various breeds of dogs, all of which originally appeared in The Field newspaper. The work includes reference to many well-known breeds of dogs including spaniels, setters, pointers and beagles; alongside articles discussing dog shows and general care and management of the various breeds. The work is an important and thorough guide to a variety of dog breeds, collated by the editor of an important country magazine, and complete with many charming illustrations.
