First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce

Containing chapters on the following countries: Austria, Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy, Portugal, Roumania, Scandinavia, Spain, Switzerland, The British Isles, The Russian Empire, Turkey, and The Balkan States. Featuring a tipped in bookplate of an 'A. L. Clarke' to the front pastedown. Copiously illustrated throughout, with numerous in-text illustrations and fifty four black and white plates. Illustrated from drawings by such notable artists as E. Caldwell, E. F. T. Bennett, and Archibald Thorburn. Thorburn was a renowned Scottish artist and animal and bird illustrator, best known for his watercolour works of British wildlife.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding, with gilt detail to boards and spine. Externally, slight bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine. Slight fading to spine. Slight rubbing to front joint, with small loss of cloth to head of front joint. Rubbing and scattered spots to boards, more severe to rear board. Tipped in bookplate to the front pastedown. Prior owner's ink inscription to front free-endpaper, dated '1932'. Slight offsetting to front free-endpaper. Small section of worming only to rear endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to extremities, but bright and clean. The odd spot and handling mark to the occasional page, heavier to first and last few pages. Small tide mark to lower fore edge of frontispiece plate. Pages occasionally uncut throughout.
