What Our Customers Say...

Description

An Important Work, Colour Plates, First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Pleasing Copy, Very Scarce

Smartly bound, in a half calf binding. An early physiotherapy treatise, which explains in detail how 'gymnastics' can assist the spine. With the bookplate of one C Robert Bignold to the front pastedown. Bignold was born in Norwich to Charles Edward Bignold and Cecilia Graver Bignold. Contemporary inscription to the recto of front endpaper, 'Wollison'. Written by Peter Gustavus Hamon. Hamon was a teacher of Gymnastic Exercises and ran a school for this purpose in Middlesex. Collated, complete. With eight coloured plates to the rear of the work. The illustrations depict methods of stretching the back, to cure spinal deformities. The final two plates depict fencing. With chapters on the deviation of the vertebral column, preventing bodily deformities and arresting their progress in children, exercises for the upper and lower extremities and other modes of rectifying the body. An unusual work, which is greatly informative on methods to prevent spinal deformities in the nineteenth century.

Condition

In a half calf binding, with paper covered boards. Externally, very smart, with light rubbing to the joints and spine. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Scattered spotting to the first and last few pages. Otherwise, just the odd spots.
