1780 Fencing Familiarized or a New Treatise on the Art of Small Sword
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Early Edition, Folding Plates, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Uncommon
A very bright copy of this work, which is bilingual, in French and English. Written by the famous French fence-master Jean Olivier. Castle notes that Olivier was 'perhaps, after Angelo, the most popular master of the small sword in London. His work is very sound, and thoroughly justifies its French title, as it contains a simplified system, shorn of all unnecessary and obsolete details'. The plates to this edition are superior in comparison to the first printing, which was issued by the same publisher in 1771. Collated, containing 13 of 14 engraved plates. Lacks plate 5 'of the Longe in Carte'. Prior owner's inscription to the head of French title page 'P D Pownoll'.
Condition
Rebound, in a full calf binding. Externally, in an excellent condition with just a few light marks to the boards. Prior owner's stamp to the upper margin of the title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright. A few minor chips to the edge of plate 7, not affecting the image. Just the odd spot.
