Complete in three volumes. The first edition of this work. A collection of the 'Flora and Sylva' magazine. 'Flora and Sylva' was a monthly magazine for gardeners and nature lovers. Volume I containing the issues published from April 1903, with issue one, to December 1903, with issue nine. Volume II containing the issues published from January 1904, with issue ten, to December 1904, with issue twenty-one. Volume III containing the issues published January 1905, with issue twenty-two, to December 1905, with issue thirty-three. Volume I illustrated with eighteen colour plates, and numerous in-text monochrome illustrations. Volume II illustrated with twenty-three colour plates, and numerous in-text monochrome illustrations. Volume III illustrated with twenty-one colour plates, and numerous in-text monochrome illustrations. William Robinson was a gardener and journalist, who popularised the idea of a wilder garden, that became popular in English cottage gardens. Before this, more structured and formal gardens had been popular in Britain. He published 'The Wild Garden' and 'The English Flower Garden'. Collated, incomplete, as Volume III is lacking pages 17 to 32, including lacking a colour plate facing page 24.
In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. A little bumping to the head and tail of the spines. Bookplate to the front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot. Lacking the tissue guards of plate facing page 182 in Volume I and 184 in Volume II. Pages 3-14 of Volume I are working lose. Volume III is lacking pages 17 to 32.
