What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Leather Binding
A very scarce edition of this work. This was one of Glasse's later publications, following her great success 'The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy'. Early editions of this work are very hard to come by.
With the facsimile signature of Hannah Glasse to page IV and to B1, as called for.
Publisher's catalogue to the rear.
ESTC: T103506.
This is the second issue of the first edition, ESTC cite it at c1770, other bibliographies cite c1760 (Cagle 708; Maclean pp.61-62).
The first edition of 'The Complete Confectioner' was never dated, and took inspiration from other contemporary authors such as Edward Lambert's 'The Art of Confectionary' and Smith's 'Compleat Housewife' and 'The Family Magazine'.
This work contains the essentials of sweet, cake, and ices making. As well as how to boil sugar, making custards and preserving drinks.
Internally, a very bright work, in need of a sympathetic rebinding.
Condition
In a contemporary calf binding. Externally, the boards are detached. Small loss to the head and tail of spine. Internally, the textblock is firmly bound. First two leaves of the publisher's catalogue are closely trimmed at the foot, affecting the text. Pages are bright. Just the odd spot and light tide-mark to page edges. Pages 37-40 are closely trimmed to the fore-edge. Prior owner's inscription to the pastedowns.
