First Edition, Illustrated, Very Scarce

The first edition of this work. A very scarce work. Illustrated with thirty-nine plates and many in-text illustrations. Collated from Jisc from a copy held at the British Library, though there is no collation for plates. Ten pages of publisher's adverts to the front, and to the rear endpaper and pastedowns. A fascinating history on champagne and other sparkling wines, looking in depth into the unique wine and how it differs from other sparkling wines, and what makes it special. Written by Henry Vizetelly, an English published and writer, who contributed to the 'Illustrated London News'. He was Wine Juror for Great Britain at the Vienna and Paris Exhibitions of 1873 and 1878, and also published 'A History of Champagne' in 1882. Illustrated with drawings by Jules Pelcoq, W. Prater, Bertall, and more.

Condition

In the original paper covered boards. Externally, sound. Lacking most of the spine. Some marks and rubbing to the boards. A little discolouration to the front board. Front board may detach with further handling. Internally, binding in broken. Pages are very lightly age-toned with the odd spot. Text block from the front board to the last contents page may detach with further handling. Textblock from pages 107 to 118 is detached but present. Title page has been excised and pasted to the front board.
