This is the first trade edition of Carroll's work which was followed a suppressed privately printed edition. The first edition of 1886 is believed to have been fifty copies and failed to reach Dodgson's standard. With the scarce original envelope tipped in to the rear containing the playing board and 7/9 of the counters. Lacking two of the original grey counters. 'The Game of Logic' uses a playful and informal style through a board game, to represent logical propositions and inferences. This work was later incorporated into a longer and formal logic textbook 'Symbolic Logic' which was published in 1897. In the academic discipline of mathematics, Carroll worked primarily in geometry, linear and matrix algebra, mathematical logic, and recreational mathematics. He was the Mathematical Lecturer at Christ Church for some 25 years. His mathematical works attracted a renewed interest in the late 20th century. Martin Gardner and William Bartley's studies sparked a reevaluation of Carroll's contributions to symbolic logic.
