Uncommon. Contains 'practical treatises' on 'fashionable games', including Whist, Quadrille, Piquet, Chess, Back Gammon, Billiards, Cricket, Tennis, Quinze and Hasard, 'in which are also contained the method of betting at those games upon equal or advantageous terms. Including the laws of the several games, as settled and agreed to at White's and Stapleton's Chocolate Houses'. Edmond Hoyle became an authority on the rules and regulations of numerous card and board games. His literary works on the subject saw numerous editions and resulted in the coining of the phrase 'according to Hoyle'. An interesting work from the 18th century, ideal for those with an interest in the history of board and card games.
Condition
In a calf binding. Externally, a trifle rubbed with some wear to extremities and spine. Front joint is tender but still reasonably firm, while rear joint is starting but still firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages slightly age-toned with some spotting. Ink inscription to front free endpaper. Ink markings to front pastedown and title page.
