The Badminton Library, originally published in twenty-eight volumes between 1885 and 1896, was a sporting and publishing project conceived and founded by Henry Somerset 8th Duke of Beaufort. It developed into a series of sporting books which aimed to cover all major sports and pastimes, with each volume written by experts who were authorities in their fields. This seven volume set contains the following volumes: 'Hunting' 'Fishing: Salmon and Trout' 'Fishing: Pike and Coarse Fish' 'Shooting: Moor and Marsh' 'Golf' 'Tennis, Lawn Tennis, Racket Fives' 'Skating, Figure-Skating, Curling ect.' 'Hunting' is a second edition copy published in 1886, written by the Duke of Beaufort and Mowbray Morris with contributions by a number of eminent huntsmen and writers. This copy is collated, complete with numerous black and white in-text illustrations by J. Sturgess and J. Charlton, and a coloured frontispiece plate with a protective tissue guard. 'Fishing: Salmon and Trout' is a sixth edition revised copy published in 1893, written by H. Cholmondeley-Pennell with contributions by other authors. This text is copiously illustrated throughout with numerous black and white in-text illustrations, and collated, complete with nine black and white plates. 'Fishing: Pike and Other Coarse Fish' is a fifth edition revised copy published in 1893, written by H. Cholmondeley-Pennell with contributions by other authors. This text is copiously illustrated throughout with numerous black and white in-text illustrations and diagrams, and collated, complete with seven black and white plates. 'Shooting: Moor and Marsh' is a fourth edition copy published in 1893, written by Lord Walsingham and Sir Ralph Payne-Gallwey with contributions by Lord Lovat and Lord Charles Lennox Kerr. This copy is collated, complete with numerous woodcut in-text illustrations by J. Stuart-Wortley, Harper Pennington, C. Whymper, J. C. Millais, and G. E. Lodge, and eight illustrated plates. 'Golf' is a second edition copy published in 1890, written by Horace G. Hutchinson with contributions by with contributions by other authors. This copy is collated, complete with numerous woodcut in-text illustrations by Thomas Hodge and Harry Furniss, and twenty two illustrated plates. The plate facing page 410 has been bound facing page 412. 'Tennis' is a first edition copy published in 1890, written by John Moyer Heathcote, with contributions by other authors. This copy is collated, complete with photographs and numerous woodcut in-text illustrations by Lucien Davis and C.M. Newton, and twelve illustrated plates. 'Skating' is a first edition copy published in 1892, written by John Moyer Heathcote, Charles Goodman Tebbutt, and T. Maxwell-Witman, with contributions by other authors. This copy is collated, complete with photographs, illustrations by Charles Whymper and R. M. ALexander, and twelve illustrated plates. 'Skating' features a tipped in bookplate of a 'William Hicks' to the front pastedown, possibly that of the English solicitor and Conservative Party politician William Joynson-Hicks, 1st Viscount Brentford.

Condition

Uniformly bound in the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Externally, slightly bumped to extremities and head and tail of spines. Slight fading to spines. Front hinge strained, but reasonably firm, 'Hunting', 'Tennis', and 'Golf'. Rear hinge split and tender 'Golf', showing cords but reasonably firm. Prior owner's bookplate tipped to front pastedown 'Hunting' and 'Skating'. Bookseller's label tipped to front pastedown 'Hunting' and 'Shooting'. Internally firmly bound, generally firmly bound only to 'Golf'. Pages age toned to extremities but generally bright and clean, with the odd spot and handling mark to the occasional page. Light scattered spots to fore edge of 'Salmon', only visible to text block'. Light scattered spots to upper extremity of the occasional page, 'Pike' and 'Skating'. Heavier spotting to 'Shooting' and 'Tennnis'. Slight offsetting to title page 'Hunting'. Ink mark to page 102, 'Salmon'. Small tear and loss to upper extremity of page 268 to 272 'Golf', not affecting text. Small loss to fore edge of page 77/8 'Golf', not affecting text.
