Description

First Edition, Leather Binding, Rebound

The first edition of these works. In two volumes. This work is an octavo. A collection of six annual reports from the Aeronautical Society of Great Britain, now renamed the Royal Aeronautical Society, or RAeS. The first volume contains the fourth, fifth, and sixth annual reports, published in the years 1869, 1870, and 1871. The second volume contains the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth annual reports, published in the years 1879, 1880, and 1881. These reports show the efforts of the Society to investigate and research the possibility of engineering a method of flying, to produce a flying machine. The reports were published in the years leading up to the first successful flight in 1903. In these reports you can see their scientific and mathematical efforts. The RAeS is dedicated to the global aerospace community, and is the oldest aeronautical society in the world. At the time these were published, the Society had at least 106 members, with the membership rising considerably each year. In the years 1870-71, they sponsored the first wind tunnel which was designed by the members Wenham and Browning. Some of the members contributing to the discourse transcribed in these reports include James Glaisher, Francis Wenham, George Campbell the Duke of Argyll, and Frederick Brearey. From the library of the Irish international hot air balloonist Wilf Woollett. The first edition of these annual reports from the Royal Aeronautical Society.
