Folding Plates, Illustrated, Leather Binding
This work was the first attempt at a systematic treatment of steam-engine theory. A sixth edition revised copy. Copiously illustrated throughout with numerous engravings, including a folding plate depicting the 'Mechanical Properties of Steam'. This copy was signed by Admiral Sir William King-Hall, who served as Commander-in-Chief The Nore from 1877 to 1879, with a contemporary ink inscription to the front pastedown: 'Devonport Dock Yard 5th Sept 1873. Presented by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to George B. Alton, Engineer Student for excellent conduct and progress at school. [Signed by William King-Hall] Admiral Superintendent [In King-Hall's script] Follow your Father's footsteps who served with me on HMS Exmouth [Signed by William King-Hall]'.
In a full polished calf binding Externally, slightly rubbed to extremities. Rubbing to head of spine resulting in loss to leather. Slight marking to boards. Slight fading to spine. Front joint split to head, slightly strained. Front hinge split and tender after endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages age toned to extremities but bright and clean. Light scattered spots to first and last few pages. Ink inscription to front pastedown, dated '1873'.
