What Our Customers Say...

Description

Illustrated

Samuel Smiles, a writer and government reformer, offers the biographies of many of Britain's great engineers in this three volume set, chronicling the life and works of James Brindley, John Smeaton, and Thomas Telford, amongst others. Smiles writes with great affection for the pioneers of civil engineering that made much of England accessible and habitable, celebrating this generation of 'home-grown' architects of modern Britain. In three volumes. With monochrome vignette illustrations throughout and engraved monochrome portrait frontispieces to each volume. Inscription to the pastedown of volume one: John F. Bickerton, from his friend, Thomas H. Bickerton, September 1924. As the engineers crafted canal and bridge, Smiles crafts a dedicated and detailed biography to those whom the infrastructure of Britain is still indebted.
