A scarce edition of this work, which reached great popularity and was subsequently reprinted frequently. This second edition is much enlarged compared to the first edition. Rebound in a beautiful half calf binding with marbled boards. John Burns was a visiting surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary before becoming Professor of Anatomy and Theory at Anderson's University. This work, among many of his other titles, were issued to be text books for students. Burns shaped his career in being an authority on abortion and midwifery. This work is detailed in its chapters on the anatomy of the pelvis, the logistics of the child's head through labour, menstruation, sterility, signs of pregnancy, diseases during pregnancy, and the many more chapters which would have been of great use to any student. A comprehensive study and practical guidance to midwifery, written by a contemporaneously international authority on the subject. A fascinating look at midwifery during the early nineteenth century.
Condition
In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with just some light shelfwear to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned. Light tidemarks to the first 120 pages, to the top corner of the pages, not affecting the text. Occasional scattered spots to pages.
