Within this work, Herbert details his fascination with sundials, and experiments with sundial technology. He comprehensively describes many different designs whilst recalling his own experiments and designs for different models, including a selection that not only tell the local time, but also the position of the sundial on the earth. Very faint blind stamped compass design to front board. Collated, complete with 15 photographic plates, and numerous vignettes. Complete with original unclipped dustwrapper with photograph design by Sandra Lousada and Clive Cadwallder.

In a bright orange cloth binding. With original price-clipped dustwrapper. Externally very smart. Slightly bumped to head of spine. Mark to lower extremity of front board. Offsetting to pastedowns. Prior owner's ink inscription to front pastedown. Dustwrapper is generally smart. Slight bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine. Slightly creased to upper extremity of rear wrap. Marked to the upper extremity of rear flyleaf. Internally, firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean, with light spotting only to the fore edge. Handling mark to lower extremity of page 197. Offsetting from dustwrapper to all endpapers at rear of text
