Courtauld was behind the family firm Courtaulds, which, under his rule, became one of the leading names in the text industry in England. An engrossing and intriguing work on chemistry, answering a number of questions ranging from basic to complex. This work was written for the education of the author's daughter. With a folding plate to the frontispiece. Written by Samuel Parkes. Parkes is now best known for this work, and for working as a manufacturing chemist.

Rebound in paper covered boards. Externally, smart. Small amount of lifting to the head of the front joint. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with just a couple of light spots.
