Original written and published in German by the renowned German school principal and educational author Thomas Joseph Heinrich Schellen, this edition was translated from the third enlarged and revised German edition by Jane and Caroline Lassell, edited by the renowned English astronomer and chemist, Sir William de Wiveleslie Abney. This copy is a very scarce second English edition. Collated complete with: numerous in-text woodcuts and fourteen plates, three of which are coloured, five of which are folding, and one of which is coloured and folding.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding with black stamped border to boards and gilt title to spine. Externally very smart with slight bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine. Slight rubbing to joints, with the odd faint handling mark to boards. Hinges split and tender, with evidence of previous repair. Bookseller's label tipped to front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to extremities but very bright and clean, with only the odd light spot heavier to first and last few pages.
