The first edition of this work. A fascinating look at the beginnings of astronomy, looking at the temple worshiping and mythology that was evident among the ancient Egyptians. Illustrated with a frontispiece, one folding plate, and numerous in-text illustrations. Collated, complete. Written by Norman Lockyer, an English scientist and astronomer. Alongside Pierre Janssen, he is credited with discovering the gas helium. Bookplate of Alexander Morison McAldowie to the front pastedown, with his pencil signature to the half-title. McAldowie was a Scottish physician, and wrote on a number of widely diverse subjects, from spinal epilepsy to birds. Bookplate to the recto to the front endpaper, 'The Daltry Library, Stoke on Trent'. With eighteen pages of publisher's adverts to the rear.
Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. A little loss to the head and tail of the spine, with cracks to the head of the joints. Light bumping to the extremities. A few light marks to the boards. Front hinge is starting but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Ink marks to the last few pages.
