Description

Illustrated, Leather Binding, Very Scarce

Very Scarce - seen at auction only once in the last 40 years. Featuring illustrations throughout the text, depicting the signs of the zodiac. With three engraved plates, one of which is folding, depicting the disk of north, south, east and west limbs of the moon. Unfortunately the frontispiece is absent. Containing remarks on the value of the knowledge of astronomy; plurality of worlds etc. The rise and progress of astronomy, with instructions for beginners, astronomical definitions, artillery sphere and description. As well a representation and epitome of the Solar System, including the new discoveries. With reference to work from Dr. John Blair; extracts selected from the valuable work on astronomy by Ferguson; and the new discoveries by Dr. Herschel, from the Philosophical Transactions.

Condition

In original tree calf binding, with calf front board. Externally, lightly rubbed, with rubbing to extremities and slight loss to the spine. Rear board is held by the cords only, and front board is detached. Internally, generally firmly bound but with endpapers detached. Generally bright and clean, with the odd scattered spotting. Light off-setting, and tide marks.
