The first edition. In the original decorative cloth binding with gilt lettering. Illustrated with a map frontispiece of the United States. A fascinating account of a journey undertaken by the author across America, travelling approximately fifteen thousand miles in sixty days. Providing an interesting overview of how America was perceived by a foreigner before the increased media representation of today. With a bookplate of Arthur Pendarves Vivian of Bosahan estate. Vivian was a British industrialist, mine-owner and Liberal politician who sat in Parliament from 1868 until 1885. He was also a frequent traveller and writer of travelogues. With 32 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of the book.
In the original full cloth binding with gilt lettering. Externally, very smart with some shelf wear to the edges and a few closed tears to the spine. Light marks to the rear board. Bookplate for Arthur Vivian to the front paste-down. Some marks to the front paste-down and free endpaper. Internally, binding strained towards the centre but otherwise firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with some age-toning to the edges and a few scattered spots towards the front and rear of the book.
