First Edition, Leather Binding, Uncommon

Marie Louis Antoine Gaston Boissier was a renowned French classical scholar, best known as one of the most prominent professors of the Collège de France and the author of a number of scholarly works Ancient History. This work is in the original French. Each volume feature a tipped in bookplate of a 'John Swinnerton Phillimore', the notable British classical scholar, translator, and poet who worked as the Professor of Greek at the University of Glasgow, and then in 1906 the Professor of Humanity. Each volume also features a tipped institutional University of Glasgow bookplate of the 'Humanity Departmental Library (Phillimore Collection)'. Both volumes are misbound, with volume I (Books 1 to 3) in a volume II binding, and volume II (Books 4 to 6 in a volume I binding. This work however is collated complete.

Condition

In a half crushed morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Misbound, with volume I in volume II binding, and volume II in volume I binding. Externally rubbed to extremities, joints and raised bands. Rubbing to tail of spine volume II resulting in slight loss to leather. Slight fading to spine, more severe to volume II. Prior owner's bookplate tipped to front pastedown. Institutional bookplate tipped to front free-endpaper volume I, and front pastedown volume II. Prior owner's ink inscription to second free-endpaper volume I, dated 'June 16, 1900'. Front hinge split and tender, showing cords after title page volume I. Internally firmly bound. Pages age toned to edges but very bright and clean throughout.
