c1880 Oeuvres de Bossuet
What Our Customers Say...
Uniformly bound, in a half morocco binding. With the original wraps bound in. Bossuet is regarded as one of the best orators, and a masterly French stylist. He was a strong advocate of political absolutism and the divine right of kings. This set contains the following works by Bossuet; 'Elevations a Dieu sur Tous Les Mysteres de La Religion Chretienne'; 'Traite de la Concupiscence'; 'Meditations sur L'Evangile'; 'Traite de la Connaissance de Dieu et de soi-meme'; 'Histoire des Variations des Eglises Protestantes' (2vol) and 'Discours dur L'Histoire Universelle'. In the original French. Prior owner's stamp to the verso of front endpapers, 'G Dubois Avocat. 12 Rue Mercelis 12 Bruxelles'. This set contains many of Bossuet's important works. His 'Discours sur L'Histoire Universelle' is regarded by many Catholics as an actualization or second edition of the 'City of God' by St Augustine of Hippo. Many regard his 'Histoire des Variations des Eglises Protestantes' as his most brilliant work. He looks at how without rules, an organised society can not function and how rules require an authorised interpreter. Undated, dated using Worldcat. A smart collection of these important works.
In uniform half morocco bindings with paper covered boards. Externally, smart. Light shelfwear to the extremities. Minor rubbing to the raised bands. To 'Meditations sur L'Evangile' there is a small loss to the leather at the spine. Prior owner's stamp to the verso of front endpaper, 'G Dubois'. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned due to the paper used. Otherwise, just the odd spot.
