    First Edition, Uncommon

    Illustrated by the Flemish Baroque engraver, Theodor Galle (1571-1633). Galle is celebrated in the Plantin-Moretus Museum. The Galle brothers are known for their long-standing collaboration with Rubens and the Plantin Press. With twelve engravings. In the contemporary vellum binding. Collated, complete. This work is a moralistic emblem book regarding opportunity and neglected opportunity. The second part 'Occasio' is a drama by the author embodying this thought process. The play has a separate title page, with the same publication details. In Latin. With the errata to T1v. Written by Johannes David, a principal of the Jesuit schools at Courtrai and Ghent. With the bookplate of Michael Jaffé CBE (1923-1997), English art historian and director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge

    Condition

    In a contemporary vellum binding. Externally, generally smart with handling marks to the boards and spine. Loss to the spine. Minor lifting to the vellum to the front hinge. Ribbon ties have been lost. Prior owners' inscriptions to the front pastedown. Bookplate to the front pastedown, Michael Jaffe. Inscription to the head of the title page, 'Collegy Soc. ? Lucernae 1607'. Stamp to the title page 'Kantons Bibliothek Luzern'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Occasional scattered spots to pages.
