Bookplate to the front pastedown, W H Hornby Steer. Reverend W H Hornby Steer was the brother of the artist Philip Wilson Steer, in Birkenhead. Their father was also a painter. 'The Family Expositor' is an influential work. It was an important reference point for John Wesley in his 'Notes of the New Testament', as he stated in his preface that he was indebted to this work for its 'useful observations'.
