Later impression. First published between 1898 and 1904. In an armorial prize binding from Clare College Cambridge. College crest to front boards. Prize bookplate to volume one stating: 'Theological Prize 1908 Award to Stewart Breeze Pelling B.A' All other volumes contain Pelling's personal bookplate. Handwritten prize slip also tipped in to volume one. Copiously illustrated, with 13 maps, including of Palestine, Judah and Israel, and St Paul's travels, along with other demonstrative tables and illustrations. Collated complete. Hastings's Dictionary of The Bible was a five volume Biblical encyclopedia, first published between 1898 and 1904. The work was editied by James Hastings, with additional assistance of John A Selbie. The first four volumes are alphabetically divided, with the fifth volume focusing upon extra articles, indexes and maps. The work includes reference to the Old Testament Apocrypha, as well as the Old and New Testament and remains an important source of Biblical information.
In an armorial half morocco binding with crest to boards. Externally very smart with rubbing to the extremities and boards resulting in some minor loss to the leather. Marks to the boards. Hinges slightly strained but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with marginal age toning and the odd spot. Bookplate to pastedown of all volumes.
