The fourth edition. Complete in two volumes. Illustrated, with twelve full page monochrome plates depicting notable literary figures. Robert Chambers was a Scottish publisher, author and journalist, who, along with his brother William, was extremely influential in mid-19th century scientific and political circles. The brothers were joint editors of their weekly publication entitled 'Chamber's Edinburgh Journal' and owing to the success of this went on to form their own publishing house 'W & R Chambers' with which this work was first published in 1844. This work describes the notable literary works of the period.
Condition
In a half calf binding. Externally generally smart, rubbed to the joints, extremities and spine. Slight lifting to the spine labels. Marks to the boards. Hinges slightly strained but firm. Slight sunning to the boards. Internally firmly bound. Slight loss to front free endpaper of volume one. Pages generally bright and clean with age toning and the odd spot, heavier to the first and last few pages.
