A very scarce limited 'Elkhorn Edition' collection of the works of Theodore Roosevelt, complete in twenty eight volumes.

Whilst widely remembered as the twenty sixth president of the United States and the driving force for the 'Progressive Era' in the United States in the early twentieth century, Theodore Roosevelt was also a notable naturalist, soldier, and prolific author who wrote with passion on a vast array of subjects, from foreign policy to the importance of the national park system. In total, Roosevelt wrote eighteen works (all of which are included within this set), including his notable autobiography 'The Rough Riders' and many other works on his favourite pastimes: ranching, exploration, and wildlife. This set also includes his ambitious work 'The Winning of the West', on the American frontier in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. In a uniform quarter crushed morocco binding with attractive marbled paper boards and endpapers. Featuring a tipped in bookplate of a 'H. M. Storey' to the front pastedown of each volume. 'New York' has two additional illustrated plates, whilst 'Through the Brazilian Wilderness' features two folding maps. With a loosely insert publisher's advertisement booklet to 'African Game Trails'.

CONDITION

In a quarter crushed morocco binding with marbled paper boards and endpapers. Externally, minor shelfwear to extremities. Slight bumping to extremities, 'Naval War of 1812' vol I. Slight rubbing to the odd raised band, 'Naval War of 1812' vol II. Small split to head of spine 'Gouverneur', with section of leather lifting. Age toned to spine, 'Book-Lover's Holidays', and 'Brazilian Wilderness', with slight rubbing to joints. The odd patch of light rubbing to leather of the occasional volume. Ink mark to front board, 'Thomas Hart Benton'. Slight sunning to upper extremity of front board to the occasional volume. Hinges very slightly strained but firm. Front hinge split and tender after front free-endpaper 'Hunting Trips' vol II, 'Thomas Hart Benton', 'New York', and 'Winning of the West' vol VI, still reasonably firm. Front hinge tender, with front free-endpaper partially detached to gutter, 'Strenuous Life'. Hinges split and tender, African Game Trails vol I. Prior owner's bookplate tipped to front pastedown. Slight offsetting to extremities of front and rear free-endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to edges but very bright and clean throughout. Very occasional offsetting from plate to facing page. Small section of worming to lower extremity of pages 13 to 136 'Gouverneur', and upper fore edge page 29 to 99, 'Winning of the West' vol III, not affecting text. The odd faint ink mark to the very occasional page, 'Winning of the West' vol I, not affecting text. Pages occasionally uncut to 'History as Literature'.
