DETAILS

The first edition of this collection of translated political songs from the thirteenth century, compiled by Thomas Wright.

The first edition of this work. This work contains a collection of political songs from the reigns on King John, Henry III, Edward I, and Edward II. The poems are printed in their original languages, ranging from Latin, Anglo-Norman, and French, with an English translation. Some of the songs include 'Song of the Siege of Thouars', 'Song of the Welsh', 'The Order of Fair-Ease', 'Against the Pride of Ladies', and more. Edited and translated by Thomas Wright. Wright was an antiquarian, who devoted himself to a literary career after contributing to various periodicals whilst studying at Cambridge. He is remembered as a great scholar. Wright helped found the Camden Society who published this book. With a bookplate to the front pastedown, belonging to Henry B. H. Beaufoy. Label to the rear pastedown, 'Henry E. Huntington Library'.
