The first edition of this scarce comprehensive guide to British horse breeds, complete with a coloured folding plate and other illustrations.

A scarce work. The first edition. Collated complete with one folding coloured plate, ten full page monochrome plates and two folding charts. The British Thoroughbred is an important work on horses and horse racing and includes comprehensive details on the history and breeding of thoroughbred horses in England and across Great Britain. The work is considered to be one of the most detailed and important works ever printed on the subject. The work also contains a detailed list of the winners of the derby from 1780 to 1899.

CONDITION

In a brown cloth binding. Externally generally smart with slight bumping to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. Slight splitting to the cloth on the joints. Spine slightly faded. A few light marks to the boards. Hinges are held by chords only and may detach with further handling Evidence of repair to rear hinge. Slight offsetting to extremities of endpapers. Internally generally firmly bound. Scattered spotting to pages, heavier to the first and last few pages. Previous owner's corrections and annotation to the list of derby winners, although in all cases original text remains visible. Plates remain cleaner with just some marginal age toning.
